Battle of the Grunge

The 90’s grunge band, Nirvana, is suing designer Marc Jacobs for trademark infringement. The concern is a smiley icon on a t-shirt which was used to promote their Nevermind release album. Nirvana trademarked the smiley face in 1992 and it was first on the band’s flyer for an opening party. Nirvana has a shirt that has two x’s for eyes and it has the band’s name on the shirt. Marc Jacob’s shirt has an M and a J for eyes and the tagline, Heaven. Marc Jacobs has a design collective, Bootleg Redux Grunge, comprised of socks, t shirts and sweatshirts. The music and fashion world often collaborate on projects and events, but this time there is some rock-y trouble, “smells like teen spirt”.
